Kelly Gaither Visualization Area Report

Efforts in 2008 Focused on providing production visualization capabilities (software and hardware) Focused on providing high quality user support Focused on training and documentation Began an effort for focusing on visualization at the petascale

Visualization Working Group Co-led by Joe Insley, Mike Papka and Kelly Gaither Meets first Tuesday of every month Has membership from each RP

Hardware Resources TACC’s Spur – in production since Oct 2008, directly connected to Ranger’s interconnect and parallel filesystem. Accessed remotely via VNC and VirtualGL. 128 compute cores (AMD) 1 TB aggregate memory 32 NVIDIA GPUs Users have access to parallel versions of VisIt, ParaView, Amira and IDL

Hardware Resources Argonne TG Vis Gateway (viz.teragrid.org) Key production component is community access to resources and services (using Globus Dynamic Account Service). Developed Vl3 – a volume rendering library using hardware graphics capabilities. Developing a portlet for Vl3 – made available on production gateway during Q4 2008.

Hardware Resources Purdue’s TeraDRE distributed rendering environment using nodes in Purdue’s Condor pool. Used for processing the computationally intensive rendering jobs that are required to make high quality computer graphics animations. Broadened access by establishing TeraGrid community accounts. IU now provides condor pool of over 2500 window-based systems that are integrated into TeraDRE.

Hardware Resources NCAR’s Twister – scheduled to deploy in production by TG 09 Twister will offer a number of traditional data analysis and post-processing applications, as well as 3D visualizations. The system will be accessible to TG users remotely via Virtual GL. Currently in friendly user mode. VAPOR is a software package developed at NCAR and will be provided on Twister.

Software The Visualization working group has compiled a comprehensive list of visualization and data analysis software provided at each of the RP sites Will be provided to the TG documentation folks when completed. Preliminary document is uploaded to the TG Roundtable area of the wiki. We are working on making recommendations for particular science cases.

EOT Activities TG 09 Visualization Gallery being led by Joe Insley and Kelly Gaither. To be a continuation of the effort started at TG 08. TG 09 Visualization Tutorial Proposal to present an integrated view of Visualization on the TeraGrid Participation from all interested RPs
