3 Defined: SCIENCE What is science? Why this definition? Knowledge that has been systematically gathered, tested, classified and interpreted.

4 So, is this science? YES!!!! 3 classifications of science: Humanities: Art, literature, music, philosophy. Looking at the aesthetic. Natural Sciences: Biology, chemistry, physics, geology, math. Looking at the physical Social Sciences: History, Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science, Economics.

5 Social Sciences We look at the past, the present, and into the future. To create a better and happier environment for humanity. What is man? Each social science is interrelated.

7 Anthropology The science of man. The study of our origins. Two types: Physical Cultural

8 Anthropology Physical Anthropology Evolution Fossils Primates Heredity Cultural Anthropology Environmental effects on culture Rituals Customs Traditions

9 Economics How we use our scarce resources to meet basic needs. Man has unlimited demands, but the supply does not fulfill those—What do we do?

10 Economics How do we use our limited resources? Money Time People Consumption Distribution

11 Political Science The study of government and politics. Concentrate on: Politics Laws Administration Theories on the state International relations.

12 Government & Politics The study of Politics, Power, & Authority The power struggle The creation and interpretation of LAWS The administration of the bureaucracy The nature and function of the state Relations between independent states

13 Sociology The study of how groups interact, and group conduct. Why do some groups thrive, but others die out. Racism

14 Sociology How do groups of humans interact? How do we care for each other? How do we work together? How do some groups succeed and others fail?

15 So what can they tell us? Who am I? What is humankind? How do people provide for their limitless needs from scarce resources? How does humankind resolve their group conflicts? From where do we get our identities? What are the problems of urban life? Who are we?
