6 A Brief History The Pagan Celts believed that the veil between the Spirit world was thinnest between 31st October and 1st November. Samhain, the Lord of the Dead would gather the souls that had been made to enter animals and decided what form they would take for the following year.

7 A Brief History 31st October was the Eve of Samuin. Harvest festival when Druids carried out rituals to protect the people. Bonfires were lit to scare away the spirits. Human sacrifices were offered. Gifts were left outside homes to avoid a trick or a curse from a spirit.

9 Christianity Arrives Roman Catholic Church called 1st November All Saints Day to wean the people away from the pagan origins of the festival. It was called the Feast of Hallows. The day before was called Halloween.
