Volcano A mountain formed when molten rock is pushed to Earth’s surface and builds up.

Types of Volcanoes Shield A broad volcano built up from the repeated nonexplosive eruption of basalt to form a low dome or shield, may erupt many times in a period of more than a million years. Cinder cone Have steep sides. They erupt for a short period of time. Formed from ash and rock blown out from a single vent within the volcano.

Types cont. Composite Volcano created at convergent plate boundaries. Lava flows from several vents and can produce a build up of gas and explosive eruptions. Hot Spot A volcanic area that forms as a tectonic plate moves over a point heated from deep within the Earth's mantle. The source of the heat is thought to be the decay of radioactive elements.

Ring of Fire Zone of composite volcanoes that produce seismic and volcanic activity. This activity happens along the margins of the Pacific Plate. the

Volcanologist Scientist that studies volcanoes and volcanic activity.
