What is Biology? Bio = life Logy = study of

What do Biologists do? Study the Diversity of Life Research Diseases Develop Technologies Improve Agriculture Preserve the Environment

Cells Basic unit of life and structure of all living things Organisms can either be multicellular or unicellular

Cells – Unicellular Called PROKARYOTES-all are single celled Unicellular – the organisms entire body consists of just a single cell DNA is not contained in a nucleus- everything is in the cell together

Cells - Multicellular Called EUKARYOTES- most are multicellular Multicellular – organism is made up of many cells. (humans) Differentiation:Cells have certain functions in the organism Has a nucleus

Tissues Many cells of the same kind working together to perform a certain function Ex: muscle cells – all work together to make muscle tissue

Organs Two or more tissues working together to perform a specific function. Nerve tissues and smooth muscle tissues work together to form your heart.

Organ Systems Two or more organs working together to perform a specific function. Ex. – digestive, respiratory, reproductive systems

Organisms (multicellular) One individual is considered an Organism Ex – humans, dogs, frogs

Populations Group of individual organisms of the same species living in a particular area. Ex: A pride of lions

Community Interacting of two or more populations that inhabit a particular area. Ex: zebras and wildebeests at the watering hole

Ecosystem Where many different communities interact and live with each other. Example: Desert, Forest, Mountains Two factors associated with ecosystems; –Abiotic – nonliving –Biotic - living

Biosphere Consist of all parts of the planet.

Complete Flow Chart of Biology! On a piece of paper… Create a flow chart using the vocab we learned today Start with CELL and end with BIOSPHERE Draw a picture under each term that represents that level. You need two examples for each level except Biosphere. Make it colorful and aesthetically pleasing.
