1. Measuring distance on a map Measuring distance on a map is one of the most important skills to develop. If you can accurately measure the distance you can accurately gauge the time it will take to cover the ground. The basics of measuring distance on a map are shown in the following slides.

2. Measuring distance on a map In this example we will measure the distance by road from point A to point B. The route has been coloured blue on the map to help highlight it. start The first step is to get a piece of paper with a long straight edge. Line it up with the first straight section of the route and mark the beginning of the route on the paper.
