2 Defining Anthropomorphic Anthropomorphic may sound intimidating, but it is an easy word once broken down. – Anthro- refers to human – -morph refers to form Therefore, anthropomorphic means to acquire human form. Anthropomorphic characters are non-human characters given human characteristics. A writer may anthropomorphize animals, plants, objects or ideas.

4 Anthropomorphizing Characters A writer anthropomorphizes characters by giving them human characteristics such as: – Speech – Emotions – Uniquely human actions Brushing teeth Playing sports Going on quests or adventures – Form Walking upright Hello Friend!

5 Anthropomorphism’s Purpose Writers use this literary technique to create characters that reflect human society in order to critique it. For example, in Beauty and the Beast, the anthropomorphized beast allows the writer to explore the themes of stereotyping and prejudice.

6 Examples of Anthropomorphic Characters in Literature In Lewis Carroll’s classic adventure tale, he anthropomorphizes many characters. Death always appears in black robes and often converses with other characters. 9 Anthropomorphic Characterization Review Anthropomorphized characters are non- human characters with human traits. Animals, objects, plants and ideas can be anthropomorphized. Writers commonly use anthropomorphism to critique aspects of human society.
