2 Page 2 Introduction Barking and Dagenham local authority are recruiting approximately 80 apprenticeship positions this September. Approximately 50% will be business for the Adult College. Other Apprenticeships available at the Adult College with private employers, e.g. 40 in Pharmacy. Large number of applications received for all positions over the last 2 ½ years, and a significant number of applications identified as requiring extra support. (Not only with literacy and numeracy)

3 Page 3 Why? – what need do they meet? The courses we have set up are alternative pathways into apprenticeships, including an access to apprenticeship. They were set up to meet challenges and needs arising from: LBBD profile and culture Internal restructuring Recruitment targets Successful Timely completions

4 Page 4 Who for? What are they designed to achieve? The Apprenticeship Pathway is designed to be inclusive Anyone can enrol on the pathway and move onto an apprenticeship at their own developmental pace. A personal pathway plan determines the route and support on offer. All learners aware they are working towards an apprenticeship. The programme is designed to improve employability overall by increasing skills levels and developing positive attitudes. This should impact on college success and recruitment.

6 Page 6 Outcomes so far Express Pathway: Employers have responded positively. Learners have responded positively Current learners appear to be significantly more willing/able to cope with the demands of an apprenticeship Early Days although it looks promising
