Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd. Kate Bondareva

Listening to music is my favourite pastime. I listen to music on TV or on the radio. At different moments I listen to different sorts of music but there are songs that stay with you forever. My number one hit is Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd. Its title is very suggestive. It must be about loneliness. The song was written and first performed in 1975. But it is still being performed and is often on the radio charts.

The words were written by Roger Waters. In the commentary of The Wall, Roger Waters states that the inspiration was Pink Floyd founding member Syd Barrett. Roger Waters has said this song was based on a poem he wrote about Syd Barrett's fall from reality. David Gilmour wrote the music based on Water's lyrics. The theme of the album is absence. They chose this as the title track because it summed up the message. The man who did their cover art, Storm Thorgerson, was the first to suggest this as the album title. The most prominent image shows 2 businessmen shaking hands, with one of them on fire. This represents an insincere business deal, with one of the men about to get burned. Fred Durst and Wes Borland of Limp Bizkit and Johnny Rzeznik of The Goo Goo Dolls performed this at the 2001 "Tribute To Heroes" telethon to benefit victims of the terrorist attacks on America.

The song is about the detached feeling most people go through life with. It is a commentary on how people cope with the world by withdrawing physically, mentally, or emotionally. It is serious and lyrical at the same time. The tune and the tone of the song could be described as philosophical. It is really a deep meaning song. When this starts, it sounds like it is coming from an AM radio somewhere in the distance. It represents the distance between the listener and the music. Well I guess everyone has their own ideas about the meanings of the lyrics of this song. The song seems to be appealing to me. I am very much impressed both by its lyrics and by its music. Every time I listen to this song. it gets more and more intence. I love all the metaphors. The lyrics read like a poem! Awesome song!

Wish You Were Here So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, Blue skies from pain. Can you tell a green field From a cold steel rail? A smile from a veil? Do you think you can tell? And did they get you to trade Your heros for ghosts? Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cool breeze? Cold comfort for change? And did you exchange A walk on part in the war For a lead role in a cage? How I wish, how I wish you were here. We're just two lost souls Swimming in a fish bowl, Year after year, Running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here.
