Starter 1. Where do these items go when we eat them? 2. How do they move around our body? 3. Why are they needed?

Lesson 1: Circulation

Lesson Objectives I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body.

Questions: 1.What process takes place in every cell of the body and requires oxygen? 2.What is the full word equation for this process? 3.How do the materials needed and produced by this process get around the body? Keywords: Circulatory system, : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body.

Question: What process takes place in every cell of the body and requires oxygen? Keywords: Circulatory system, : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body. Respiration

Question: What is the full word equation for this process? Keywords: Circulatory system, : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body. Respiration: Oxygen + Glucose  Carbon dioxide + Water (+ Energy)

Question: How do the materials needed and produced by this process get around the body? Keywords: Circulatory system, : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body. Materials are passed around the body in the blood.

How does the blood get around the body? Is an organ – tissue working together. Is a double pump It pumps blood around the body. The lining is made of tissue to allow smooth blood flow. The wall is made of muscle tissue – to squeeze the blood out of the heart. Inside there are valves so blood flows in one direction. Keywords: Circulatory system, : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body. From the Body to the lungs From the lungs to the body

A Pump Task: Make a fist! Children hearts are approx the size of their fist Adult hearts are approx the size of 2 fists Open and close your fist – This is like the heart pumping (70 times a minute). Keywords: Circulatory system, : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body.

Force Squeeze a tennis ball – this is about the force the heart needs to pump blood around the body. Keywords: Circulatory system, : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body.

Blood Vessels There are three main blood vessels in the body: Arteries: Carry blood AWAY from the heart (Arteries Away). Veins: Carry blood TO the heart. (Vein – Vay In) Capillaries: Minute vessels that link the arteries and veins. Keywords: Circulatory system, Aorta, Artery, Capillaries, : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body.

Other facts The aorta, the largest artery in the body, is almost the diameter of a garden hose. Capillaries, on the other hand, are so small that it takes ten of them to equal the thickness of a human hair. Keywords: Circulatory system, Aorta, Artery, Capillaries, : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body.

Blood Vessels Keywords: Circulatory system, Aorta, Artery, Capillaries, : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body.

Blood Vessels Arteries: Almost all carry oxygenated blood (expect pulmonary artery). As the arteries get further from the heart, the lumen (centre of the artery) gets smaller. Walls are made of elastic fibres and smooth muscle. Keywords: Circulatory system, Aorta, Artery, Capillaries, : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body.

Blood Vessels Capillaries: Minute vessels Oxygenated blood enters. Allow exchange of oxygen and food into cells. Allow exchange of carbon dioxide and other waste back into the blood – to be removed by the body. Have very thin walls to allow exchange to take place. Deoxygenated blood leaves. Keywords: Circulatory system, Aorta, Artery, Capillaries, : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body.

Blood Vessels Veins: Almost all carry deoxygenated blood (expect pulmonary vein). Main vein is the Vena Cava which carries blood to the heart. Have a large lumen. Walls are made of thin layer of smooth muscle with few elastic fibres. Keywords: Circulatory system, Aorta, Artery, Capillaries, : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body.

Model Blood: Keywords: Circulatory system, : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body. Cold tea without milk to represent plasma Red lentils to act as red blood cells Small marshmallows to be white blood cells Porridge oats to represent platelets Salt/sugar to demonstrate dissolved nutrients

Question: What do the different parts of blood do? Keywords: Circulatory system, : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body. Part of BloodRole Red blood cellsThese carry oxygen around the body. White blood cellsThese form part of the immune system to fight infection/disease. PlateletsPlatelets are irregularly-shaped, colourless bodies that are present in blood. Their sticky surface lets them form clots to stop bleeding. Blood plasmaThe liquid part of blood where cells float in.

Oxygenated and Deoxygenated blood: In the lungs, oxygen diffuses into the blood to form oxygenated blood (red blood). The oxygen is delivered to the cells around the body, where oxygen diffuses out of the blood into the cells. The blood is now deoxygenated (blue blood). In return, carbon dioxide diffuses out of the cell into the blood. The blood returns to the lungs to allow the carbon dioxide to diffuse out, and oxygen in. Keywords: Circulatory system, : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body. body’s cells lungs

More about Red Blood Cells These are very important cells. They carry oxygen around the body. They have NO nucleus, so that they can pack in more oxygen. When they carry oxygen – they are oxygenated. When they have no oxygen – they are deoxygenated. Keywords: Circulatory system, : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body.

More about Blood Respiration also need GLUCOSE to be transported to every cell. Keywords: Circulatory system, : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body.

Review Objectives I still feel unsure. I need some more help to understand. I feel ok. I need to do some more work to check my understanding. I am happy and feel I understand and can explain the main points. Keywords: Circulatory system, Aorta, Artery, Capillaries, Atrium, Ventricle, Aorta, Vena Cava : : I know that the circulatory system moves food and oxygen around the body. I know that there are three main vessels which carry blood. I know that the heart is four chambered organ which pumps blood around the body.
