1 Put these events in the correct order
Pasteur is asked to help out the French chicken industry. All their chickens are dying of chicken cholera. Pasteur realises that a vaccine has been developed by leaving the chicken cholera germ out in the air for a few days. Joseph Meister survives, Pasteur has proof that his rabies is successful. Pasteur is asked to help out the French sheep industry. Sheep are dying from anthrax. Pasteur starts working on a vaccine for a human disease, rabies. He thinks he has developed one. When he returns from holiday, he injects the chickens but they do not die, even when they are injected with chicken cholera again. Pasteur is forced to test his vaccine for rabies because a mother brings her son, Joseph Meister to him after he has been bitten by a rabid dog. One of Pasteur’s research team forgets to inject the chickens with chicken cholera before going on holiday. Pasteur develops a vaccine for anthrax, and carries out a public experiment on a French farm to prove to the world that his vaccine works.

3 Who is more important: Jenner, Pasteur or Koch?
Treating disease Who is more important: Jenner, Pasteur or Koch? L/O To consolidate your learning on three key individuals in medicine To evaluate the relative importance of each individual to understanding the causes of disease.

4 Starter Activity – Pasteur, Koch or Jenner?
I worked with a brewing company I published the Germ Theory in 1861 I was a a doctor in Gloucestershire I studied anthrax I proved the Germ Theory I developed a vaccine for smallpox I had a theory that it was micro-organisms that caused decay I am a scientist I carried out an experiment by injecting James Phipps with cowpox and then injecting him with smallpox I put my theory to the test with silkworms I overheard a story that milkmaids never caught smallpox I identified bacteria that cause specific diseases I developed vaccinations for chicken cholera, anthrax and rabies I was interested in Edward Jenner’s ideas on vaccination

5 Read the summary sheet about Jenner, Pasteur and Koch

6 Which individual deserves a statue of honour?
A statue of honour is being made for the person who made the greatest contribution to defeating disease in the nineteenth century. The problem is, the people making the statue can’t decide who the statue should be of, should it be Edward Jenner, Louis Pasteur or Robert Koch? They have asked you to decide.

7 Why are they important? Arguments in favour of Jenner
Arguments in favour of Pasteur Arguments in favour of Koch

8 Homework Revise Jenner, Pasteur and Koch
You have your half-term assessment next week so you will need to revise: What they did How they help medicine progress Was one more significant

9 To achieve a D-grade To achieve a C-grade To achieve a B-grade
You will have answered the question but you will not have supported your arguments with evidence OR you will only provide arguments which show that one person deserves the statue To achieve a C-grade You will have shown that 2 different people could be deserving of the statue You will have supported your points with evidence To achieve a B-grade You will have shown that all 3 different people could deserve the statue. You will have supported your points with evidence. To achieve an A-grade You will have explained how all 3 different people could deserve the statue. You will have supported your explanations with evidence You will reach a conclusion saying who you think most deserves the statue.
