1 An Incremental Approach For Teaching Field Mapping Using Rugged Tablet Computers and GIS Mark Manone Department of Geography, Planning and Recreation Geospatial Research and Information Lab Paul Umhoefer, Abe Springer and Tom Hoisch NAU Department of Geology

2 History of GIS in Geosciences at NAU Should GIS be included with field methods? Daunting?

3 GLG 440 - Advanced Field Geology -Capstone Geology course, review basic field methods: -using the compass, map orienteering, plotting data, notetaking, and sample collection. -The class is introduced to the basic rock units by visiting outcrops in the map area. The instructor generally begins a mapping project by leading the students in a reconnaissance of a major part of the map area, or by mapping a small part of the project area -Class of 15-20 students will typically have one professor and one graduate student as instructors for field exercises.

4 An incremental approach…typically 4 exercises GIS components of each: Exercise 1 – Previewing the field area, getting to know your conquest and getting to know your data Exercise 2 – Georeference a traditional field map, edit and digitize geologic features in GIS, produce a final digital map Exercise 3 – Complete digital mapping in a GIS with Rugged tablet computers and integrated GPS Exercise 4 – Pick you poison! Kinda.
