Primary I/O Book Up to 2 types of IO Books, Half-Length and Full-Length Each IO Book delivers an additional 3 PCIe slots Hosts the IMM, PCIe slots, and the dedicated Mezz-LOM solution This is the rear-view of the x3850 X6, once again sporting the modular rack design. The modular book design that is being featured here is around the IO books. The top left shows the rear of the x3850 X6, and starting from right to left, we have the Primary IO Book. This IO book hosts the integrated management module or IMM, PCIe slots, and the new dedicated Mezz-LOM slot. This book is standard in every server. Let’s briefly talk about the the Mezz-LOM slot in the primary IO book as it is the new common networking form factor for several System x rack servers. Instead of designing a lan-on-motherboard or LOM down on the board, the LOM is placed on several mezzanine cards. These cards will support flavors of 1GbE copper and 10GbE fiber or copper. The x3850 X6 supports a dedicated slot for these Mezz-LOM cards. At launch, the x3850 X6 will support a quad port 1GbE copper card, a dual port 10GbE copper card, and a dual port 10GbE SFP+ fiber card. These cards host several key vendors such as Intel, Broadcom, and Emulex – giving clients maximum choice and flexibility. To the left of the Primary IO book are optional IO books. Each optional IO book delivers an additional 3 PCIe slots – allowing the x3850 X6 to deliver up to 9 PCIe slots in the rear of the server. Optional IO books come in two flavors, a half-length IO book that supports 3 half-length, full-height PCIe cards, and a full-length IO book that supports 3 full-length, full-height PCIe cards. The full-length IO book support specialty Graphics or accelerator cards that may require 300W power. This is a big advancement for the x3850 because as it can support up to two of these power hungry graphics cards it can be a powerful offering for VDI and graphics intensive applications. Clients can choose to install one or both or none of these optional IO books, and can clients select between having 6 half-lenfth, or 6 full-length or a mix of half-length and full-length slots through these optional IO books – to create that perfect fit for purpose configuration – maximizing flexibility while lowering the acquisition cost. As you can see now, all of the components in the x3850 X6 are modular, and can be accessed from either the front or rear of the server – never a need to pull the actual chassis out of the server. Maximum agility to meet the client’s needs, maximum agility to grow, and maximum agility to deliver a lower cost of ownership. This is based on the IBM General Parallel File System™ (GPFS™) software (high-performance, seamless expansion, data reliability between nodes without human involvement). IBM GPFS was designed as a parallel file system, and has been widely employed in supercomputing for more than a decade. It has shown near-linear scalability in extremely large configurations – systems with 1,000+ nodes are common, and the largest exceed 5,000 nodes. Data volumes often run to hundreds of terabytes, and petabyte-scale systems have been deployed. Overview of project An American multinational document management corporation that produces and sells a range of color and black-and-white printers, multifunction systems, photocopiers, digital production printing presses, and related consulting services and supplies. This company also offers managed IT services and runs own data centres. STG Lab Services delivered consulting and technical assistance for the implementation of a Disaster Tolerant IBM SAP HANA Appliance. Th company is running the Disaster Tolerant environment in two data centres near Telford as a managed service in the UK. The service ensured the complex Disaster Recovery configuration between Operating System, GPFS, Network switches and SAP HANA application spanned over two data centres.
