5. We begin today’s news with an important message about service learning and the superintendent’s award. The Superintendent's Service Learning award is given to those students who have earned 75 or more service hours while in middle school. It is the only SSL award given to Middle School students. If you have received this award in the past, you are not eligible to receive it again.

6. If you would like to be considered for the Superintendent's Student Service Learning award, you must turn in your SSL forms by FRIDAY, April 1 to Mrs. Hill in the counseling office. Any SSL forms submitted after this date will not be considered for the Superintendent's award.

7. Hello Parkland! The 2011 yearbooks are on sale now for the amazing, super value price of just $35.00 They will sell quickly so Don’t Delay!! You can pay by Cash, Check, or Money Order. See Mr. Schwartz in the Guidance office to make payments. You can also order online by going to the Parkland Website and click on the “Jostens Yearbook orders” Link.

8. The STAR Scholarship Foundation was established by Paul Peck in 1992 to help African-American/black students achieve their higher education goals. The purpose of this foundation is to show African American and Black students that there is hope, the community cares and studying pays.

9. While the main focus of the program is to award college scholarships to deserving high school students, the foundation does offer merit awards for 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grade students who have consistently above average grades, or grades showing significant progressive improvement or significant academic accomplishments.

10. Star Merit Award winners receive gift cards which can be used as you wish. 8 th graders compete for $150 or $75 cards. 7 th graders compete for $100 or $50 cards and 6 th graders compete for $25 cards. STAR winners also receive recognition at an award ceremony and move onto the fast rack for eligibility in other scholarship opportunities. There is an application and essay form to complete. This form is available online from the school web page or from Guidance. The Deadline is April 1 st. No fooling.

11. Apply today for a STAR Merit Award. It’s cash money for doing good in school. More details in guidance. Deadline to apply is April 1 st.

12. April 15 th is the last day before Spring Break and ………it is also ……. Physical Education Sports Day! The 6 th Grade will be going to the Discovery Sports Center. The cost for this trip is $12. The 7 th Grade is on the ice at the Cabin John Ice rink. The cost for this trip is $15. 8 th graders are at Champion Sports Center. The cost for this trip is $15

13. This will be an exciting day filled full of activities and a major chance to get some good education time away from school. But……..you have to have a signed permission form and payment to participate. All money and permission slips must be turned in at the School Store

15. Listen up all 6 th grade boys! If you like basketball and want to play for Parkland next year then you need to see Coach Doye. Look for him during lunch or before school this week.

17. SGA Elections See Ms. Marroquin if you are interested in running for an SGA office for the 2011- 2012 school year. Information Packets are available and MUST be handed in by March 29 th. Elections- April 13 th

18. Rockville Science Day is coming up on Sunday, April 10. This is a great family event to experience and enjoy science and engineering. It will take place at Montgomery College in Rockville, from noon to 5pm
