12 What happens since we did not meet AMAOs? A district that fails to meet one or more of the AMAOs must inform the parents of English learners that it has not met its AMAOs. This notification should be sent by letter within 30 days of public release of AMAO Accountability Reports by CDE. We send out these letters from the Admin Office. A copy of what we send is on the next slide.

13 Sample Parent Letter Dear Parent or Guardian: Thompson School District receives Title III funding from the federal government of the United States of America to support emerging bilingual students to speak, understand, read, and write in English and to achieve in reading and mathematics. Students who are identified as English learners are required to take an English language proficiency assessment, known as the CELA proficiency assessment, each year to help measure their growth in English. This test is usually given in January of each year. The results of this test are reviewed to see if they meet objectives, defined by the State of Colorado, for this group of students. These objectives are called the Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives and are usually referred to as AMAO. AMAO 1 is to measure progress on the test in learning academic English. AMAO 2 is to measure the percentage of students who become proficient in English according to the test. AMAO 3 is measured by the students’ scores in math and reading on the Colorado Student Assessment Program tests known as the CSAP. The purpose of this letter is to inform you that for the 2009-2010 school year Thompson School District met the objectives in AMAO 1 & 2 but not in AMAO 3. This does not mean that your child is not learning English. It means that the district, as a whole, did not meet the targets established by the state of Colorado for these objectives. The area that the district did not meet this objective is in mathematics at the middle school level. All other targets were met. 14 What happens since we did not meet AMAOs ? A district that fails to meet AMAOs for two consecutive years must develop an improvement plan to address the specific factors that prevented it from achieving the AMAOs, included in the district Unified Improvement Plan Continued failure to meet AMAOs can result in loss of funding.
