2 Chinese Beliefs The Chinese had a deep respect for nature. They believed that nature was filled with spirits. Humans did not conquer nature but took their rightful place in it. In Chinese art humans were seen as insignificant figures against the vastness of their natural surroundings.

3 Writing as an Art Form. The Chinese considered writing to be an art form. The earliest forms of writing appeared as pictographs on oracle bones. Calligraphy was developed from this early form of writing.

4 Chinese Ceramics The Chinese were the first to use the pottery wheel to make ceramics. They also used a glasslike coating to glaze their pottery. The two innovations were the beginnings of modern ceramics.

5 Clay Army In 1974 near Xian, 7000 life size clay soldiers and horses were found in underground vaults. The army was created by Qin emperor to guard him in the after life.

7 The Ancient Chinese were very proud people and put great effort into their art. They created pottery, architecture, and sculptures.
