2. It is the belief of the coaching staff, teachers, and administration that the use of tobacco, alcohol/marijuana, and legend drugs are not conducive to maximum performance in athletics/activities and can be detrimental to the student’s health and welfare. The district has adopted a policy that deals with each of the above three areas (tobacco, alcohol/marijuana, and legend drugs) to provide fair, consistent discipline which is designed to help the student get assistance with substance abuse. NORTH BEACH ATHLETIC DRUG POLICY

3. The use, and/or possession of/or selling of any legend drugs and/or controlled substances, or knowingly participating in and/or promoting illegal legend drugs and controlled substance use in or outside of school hours, is strictly forbidden and will result in the appropriate disciplinary action. If student athletes find themselves in a situation where legend drugs and/or controlled substances are being used, possessed, promoted or sold, in or out of school in violation of the above-stated policy they are expected to leave immediately. 1st Offense: The participant shall be immediately ineligible for interscholastic competition in the current interscholastic sports program for the remainder of the season (see options below). LEGEND DRUGS

4. A student athlete that is found to be in violation of legend drugs and controlled substances shall have two options: 1. The student athlete will be ineligible for participation in interscholastic competition and practices for the remainder of that interscholastic sports season and must meet with the school eligibility board for a determination of the student athlete’s eligibility to compete in the next sport season the student athlete wishes to participate in. The eligibility board will make a recommendation to the school principal. The principal will have the final authority regarding the student athlete’s eligibility for participation in further sports programs. 2. The student athlete will be denied participation in further interscholastic competition for a period of 20 school athletic/participation days a team actually practices/participates, but will be required to practice and attend all team functions. The student athlete will be required to participate and to follow the recommendations resulting from a student drug health assessment. Failure to comply with all recommendations resulting from a student drug health assessment shall cause the student athlete to be ineligible for participation in interscholastic competition for the remainder of that interscholastic sports season and require the student athlete to meet with the school eligibility board in order to be eligible to compete in the next sports season the student athlete wishes to participate in. 5. 2nd Offense: Any student athlete who is in violation for a second offense shall be ineligible for interscholastic competition for a period of one calendar year from the date of the second violation. 3rd Offense: Any student athlete who is in violation for a third offense shall be permanently ineligible for interscholastic competition. LEGEND DRUGS: FURTHER OFFENSES

6. The use, and/or possession of/or selling of any alcoholic beverages and/or marijuana substances/paraphernalia, or knowingly participating in and/or promoting alcohol or marijuana use in or outside of school hours, is strictly forbidden and will result in the appropriate disciplinary action. If student athletes find themselves in a situation where alcoholic beverages and/or marijuana substances are being used, possessed, promoted or sold in or out of school in violation of the above-stated policy, they are expected to leave immediately. ALCOHOL/MARIJUANA

7. 1st Offense: The student athlete will be denied participation in further interscholastic competition for a period of 40 school athletic/participation days a team actually practices/participates. The student athlete is required to practice and attend all team functions, but may not participate in any interscholastic competition. After a total of 40 school/athletic participation days, the student athlete may participate in interscholastic competition. Should the infraction occur with less than 40 days remaining in the season, the suspensions will carry over to the next sport season in which the student athlete will participate. Assessment Option: When a student athlete is reportedly using, possessing or selling alcoholic beverages and/or marijuana substances or knowingly participating in or promoting alcoholic or marijuana use in or outside school hours in violation of the above-stated policy, school officials shall conduct a thorough investigation. If the student athlete is cooperative and truthful when first questioned regarding the alleged offense, the sanction will be reduced by 5 days. If the student athlete restricted by this section (and the parent(s) of the student athlete) agree to comply with the recommendations resulting from an alcohol/marijuana health assessment, the restriction may be reduced by 15 days. The two reductions listed above may be combined for a total of 20 of the 40 day sanction. Failure to comply with the recommendations of the student alcohol/marijuana health assessment will result in the full penalty being imposed. ALCOHOL/MARIJUANA: 1 ST OFFENSE

8. Any Subsequent Offense: of the above-stated rules concerning alcoholic beverages and marijuana substances during participation in grades 7-12, the student athlete will be immediately dismissed from the team for the remainder of the sport season or 45 school/athletic participation days a team actually practices/participates, whichever is greater. The student will also forfeit the privilege to earn any school letter, certificate, or award for the current season. Should the infraction occur with less than 45 days remaining in the season, the suspension shall carry over to the next sport season in which the student athlete participates. ALCOHOL/MARIJUANA: FURTHER OFFENSES

9. The use and/or possession of/or selling of any tobacco products (including smokeless tobacco and/or electronic cigarettes and paraphernalia) inside or outside of school hours is strictly forbidden and shall result in the appropriate disciplinary action. TOBACCO

10. 1st Offense: The student athlete will be denied participation in further interscholastic competition for a period of 25 school/athletic participation days a team actually practices/participates. During that time the student athlete must practice and attend with the team all team functions including interscholastic competition, but may not participate in interscholastic competition. Should the infraction occur with less than 25 days remaining in the season, the suspension shall carry over to the next sport season in which the student athlete participates. Assessment Option: When a student athlete is reportedly involved in a tobacco situation, school officials will conduct a thorough investigation. If the student athlete is cooperative and truthful when first questioned regarding the alleged offense, the sanction will be reduced by 5 days. TOBACCO: 1 ST OFFENSE

11. 2nd Offense: The student athlete will be immediately dismissed from the team for the remainder of the sport season or 45 school/athletic days a team actually practices/participates, whichever is greater. Should the infraction occur with less than 45 days remaining in the season, the suspension shall carry over and be imposed in the next sport season in which the student athlete participates. Assessment Option: If the student athlete restricted by this section (and the parent(s) of the student athlete) agree to comply with all the recommendations resulting from a tobacco health assessment, the restriction may be reduced to 20 days. Failure to comply with the recommendations of the student tobacco health assessment shall cause the full penalty to be installed. TOBACCO: 2 ND OFFENSE

12. 3 rd Offense: The student athlete will be immediately dismissed from the team for the remainder of the sport season or 45 school/athletic participation days a team actually practices/participates, whichever is greater. The student will also forfeit the privilege to earn any school letter, certificate, or award for the current season. Should the infraction occur with less than 45 days remaining in the season, the suspension shall carry over to the next sport season in which the student athlete participates. TOBACCO: 3 RD OFFENSE

13. Being present and remaining on premises where illegal controlled substances, alcohol, or other drugs are knowingly being used also will not be tolerated. If student athletes find themselves in a situation where legend drugs and/or controlled substances are being used, possessed, promoted or sold, in or out of school in violation of the above-stated policy they are expected to leave immediately. Students who are guilty of being in proximity of legend drugs, alcohol/marijuana, and/or tobacco shall be subject to the same disciplinary action(s) as described above. PROXIMITY RULE

14. This policy is in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the sports season including vacations during the season. This rule does not apply to events where alcohol use is restricted to adults. Summer Participation-Athletic Suspension Student athletes whose athletic suspension exceeds their sport season’s length may not practice or compete during summer activities (camps, practices, games, etc.). Summer suspension days will count towards the student athlete’s suspension time as long as the coach keeps accurate attendance records. Suspension days can only be counted for days a team actually practices/participates. DURATION
