Opening Assignment You do not have to write this prompt down!! Today we are beginning our study of Phylum Chordata. What animals do you think belong to this phylum? List as many MARINE chordates as you can think of on a scrap of paper.

Opening Assignment What organisms in Phylum Chordata did you find the most interesting so far? You will betaking notes on Phylum Chordata today so please get some notebook paper out.

Phylum Chordata In Latin means "cord” Notes

Common names All fish, sharks, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals (Vertebrates) but there are also invertebrate chordates such as the lancelet and the tunicate. Notes

What makes an Chordate a Chordate? Notochord –supportive rod that extends most of the length of the body and into tail; dorsal to body cavity –flexible to allow lateral bending (swimming) –in most adult vertebrates is replaced by cartilage or bone Notes

What makes an Chordate a Chordate? Pharyngeal gill slits –openings between pharynx and outside of body –in some chordates, have become: gill pouches (gills never break to outside) earliest chordates used them for filter feeding gill slits of higher vertebrates are only present during embryonic development Notes

What makes an Chordate a Chordate? Tubular nerve cord hollow portion filled w/fluid in vertebrates, vertebrae surround & protect nerve cord forms central nervous system enlarges into brain Notes

What makes an Chordate a Chordate? Post anal tail extension of nerve cord and notochord past anus provides method of locomotion in aquatic chordates Lost in adult stages of many vertebrates (humans & frogs) Notes

Sub phylum Cephalochordata (lancelets) Small (5 cm/ 2 inch) “fish like” creature Marine, live burrowed in sand Transition between invertebrates and vertebrates Retains notochord throughout its whole life (doesn’t turn into vertebrae) Notes

Sub phylum Urochordata (tunicates, a.k.a. seasquirts) Video intro Pelagic Notes

Opening Assignment Grab a chromebook and login to the spreadsheet we have used to gather info on your favorite marine chordate. Today you will continue working on your Marine Chordate research project to present to the class on Thursday. You will have today and tomorrow to finish it up and then you will present in class on Thursday.

Chordate Research Project Work on chordate research project.

The Cove Today we will start watching The Cove. Pay attention to the purpose of capturing the dolphins and the way they are disposed of if they don’t make the cut.
