3 Rococo Art What are the characteristics of the Rococo style, and why was it popular with aristocrats? Be able to identify (title and artist) and discuss the Rococo elements in Watteau’s The Anxious Lover. Also refer to –Boucher’s paintings in the slide following Anxious Lover and his Diana Leaving the Bath on p. 399 –Nave and high alter in the Pilgrim Church, Bamberg, Germany (p. 403)

7 Classical Music What is meant by “Classical” music, in reference to a specific period? What are its characteristics? What instruments made up a “standard orchestra” in the period? Explain the meaning of “symphony”, and describe the four basic movements of a classical symphony. Focus on Mozart. How would you summarize key information about his life in a few sentences? In what ways does his Marriage of Figaro express the conflicting themes/perspectives of the 18 th c.? 8 Literature What were the characteristics of the Augustans? Why was satire such an important literary genre during this time? Be familiar with Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal.” How does Swift use irony to make his points? How many attitudes and institutions can you list that Swift satarizes?
