2 Discretion Exercise of individual judgment, instead of formal rules, in making decisions A. Patrol Officer Discretion- decide where to patrol, who worth patrolling 1. Full Enforcement- practice, were police make arrest for every violation that they come in contact with 2. Selective Enforcement- practice of relying on the judgment of the police leadership and rank to decide which laws to enforce

Nature of Crime- more serious more likely to be written up Department Policies – Department gives orders (has to enforce) Relationship between Victim and Offender- more discretion if they know the person Amount of Evidence- handle differently if there is not enough evidence Preference of Victim- victim might just want to talk it out Demeanor of the Suspect- is the suspect disrespectful Legitimacy of the Victim- patrol officers are bound to pass some kind of judgment on legitimacy of the victim Socioeconomic Status- more affluent complaints more likely to patrol officer will use formal procedure
