Welcome to the Pre-Calculus 20 Workshop! Friday, November 4th, 2011

Today’s Workshop Goals  To become more familiar with the curriculum outcomes and indicators connected to Chapters 5, 6,7  To try some of the “investigate” and “mini- lab” activities that support the curriculum outcomes and inquiry based approach  To network with other teachers in the division that are teaching the course – share ideas, resources, etc

Today’s Plan  Teacher Talk  Chapter 5: Radical Expressions & Equations  Chapter 6: Rational Expressions & Equations  Chapter 7: Absolute Value & Reciprocal Functions  Questions  Feedback

Pre-Calculus 20 Teacher Talk What is going well? What concerns do you have ? Feedback for publisher/future teachers? What else needs to be addressed during our Interdepartmental meeting time? When should we have our next workshop?

Chapter 5 – Radical Expressions and Equations 5.1 – Working with Radicals p. 272 5.2 – Multiplying & Dividing with Radicals Investigate p. 282 5.3 – Radical Equations p. 294

Chapter 5 – Radical Expressions and Equations Technology  Applet – Visualizing Radicals on the Number line  Applet – Simplifying Radicals  Interactive Activity – Rationalize the Denominator

Chapter 6 – Rational Expressions and Equations Prior Knowledge: Operations with fractions and factoring 6.1 – Rational Expressions  Investigate p. 310 - 311  Applet – Identifying Non-Permissible Values 6.2 - Multiplying & Dividing Rational Expressions  Investigate p. 322

Chapter 6 – Rational Expressions and Equations 6.3 – Adding & Subtracting Rational Expressions 6.4 - Rational Equations Curriculum Connection

Chapter 7 – Absolute Value and Reciprocal Functions Go through your assigned section and be prepared to share & discuss with group using the questions provided as a guide.

 What are the key concepts of this section?  What prior knowledge is required?  Based on the curriculum outcomes/indicators, what aspects of this section are important?  What aspects of this section may be challenging to our students?  How would you use the investigate activity to facilitate learning?

Chapter 7 – Absolute Value and Reciprocal Functions Technology 7.1: Applet – Graph Absolute Value 7.2: Interactive Activity – Graph Absolute Value 7.3: Interactive Activity – Solve an Absolute Value Equation 7.4: Applet – Vertical Asymptotes, Animation – Graph the Reciprocal
