Sports Frýdek-Místek is an ideal starting point for the most comprehensive tourist and sport outings in the nearby Beskydy. Carefully marked bike paths are suitable for families with children, as well as for those who like to make longer trips by bike. Tourists on foot will enjoy the feeling when they climb the 1324-meter high Lysá hora, also called the temple of Beskydy tourists. Golfing grounds are also quickly going up. In winter there is quality skiing available in the Beskydy on well-equipped slopes, cross-country skiers can set out along the protracted ridge. At several locations - for example, on Ondřejník or at Javorový near Třinec - lovers of para- gliding will be enthralled. Sailing and wind surfing can be found at the dam Olešná. Olešná, built in 1964, has a water surface area of 87.8 hectares and a maximum depth of 13.2 m. During summer and the weekends it becomes the principal recreational centre, allowing for swimming, wind-surfing, yachting and fishing. The dam also provides protection from seasonal flooding. Followers of alternative activities can organize something for racing sports on the grounds of the multi-purpose sports hall. Horseback riders will find riding grounds at Pánské Nové Dvory or at Sviadnov just behind Místek. Tennis lovers will also find an excellent choice of possibilities directly in the centre of the city at the well-kept courts near the Ostravice River. Cyclists can take advantage of marked cycling trails. Climbers can even try out the climbing wall at one of the local high schools. The possibilities are simply rich in store. Culture The remains of the former town fortification walls from the early 1300s can still be admired in Frýdek. At the Frýdek square, one is certain to notice the chateau and its gardens. The chateau's predecessor was a Gothic castle of regional importance, built at the beginning of the 14th century. Together with several historical buildings in the nearby Hluboká and Zámecká streets, the chateau serves as the seat of the Museum of Beskydy that offers two permanent exhibitions - the Chateau Exhibition and the exhibition Beskydy, Nature, and People. Apart from these, however, a number of short-term art and curiosities exhibitions are always on display in the exhibition rooms. The chateau complex includes the baroque Chapel of St. Barbara. In the center of the square there is a fountain with a sculpture of St. Floral made in 1894. The square itself is formed by Renaissance buildings with facades dating to later times (the baroque and Romantic periods). The street Hluboká with its originally baroque buildings belongs to the historical centre of the town.
