1
Binary Molecular Nomenclature ► Two nonmetals ► no charges to balance ► multiple subscripts possible ex: N 2 O, NO, NO 2, N 2 O 4, N 2 O 5
2
Use prefixes to represent subscripts ►m►m►m►mono = 1 ►d►d►d►di = 2 ►t►t►t►tri = 3 ►t►t►t►tetra = 4 ►p►p►p►penta = 5 ►H►Hexa = 6 ►h►hepta = 7 ►o►octa = 8 ►n►nona = 9 ►d►deca = 10
3
Rules, continued.. ►C►C►C►Change second name to end in “ide” ►d►d►d►do not use prefixes on the first word if the prefix is “mono” ►a►a►a►always use prefixes on the second name
4
Examples... ►C►C►C►CO2 ►c►c►c►carbon = first word ►s►s►s►subscript = 1, so no prefix ►o►o►o►oxide = second word ►s►s►s►subscript = 2, so prefix = di ►c►c►c►carbon dioxide
5
Examples... ►C►C►C►CO ►c►c►c►carbon = first word ►s►s►s►subscript = 1, so no prefix ►o►o►o►oxide = second word ►s►s►s►subscript = 1, so prefix = mono ►c►c►c►carbon monoxide
6
Examples... ►P►P►P►P2F6 ►p►p►p►phosphorus = first word ►s►s►s►subscript = 2, so prefix = “di” ►f►f►f►fluoride = second word ►s►s►s►subscript = 6, so prefix = hexa ►D►D►D►Diphosphorus hexafluoride
7
Examples... ►D►D►D►Dinitrogen tetroxide ►d►d►d►di = 2, so two nitrogen’s ►t►t►t►tetra = 4, so 4 oxygens ►N►N►N►N2O4
8
Examples... ►t►t►t►trisulfur heptachloride ►t►t►t►tri = 3, so three sulfur’s ►h►h►h►hepta = 7, so seven chlorides ►S►S►S►S3Cl7
9
Important!!!!! ► Never ever ever ever ever ever use prefixes if there are any metals in the compound!!!
