28 Red River Conflict Lord Selkirk brought in poor farmers to the Red River in the Northwest.  The land was already occupied by Metis, NWC and First Nations who hunted and traded pemmican in the area. The farmers were to grow crops for the HBC and help feed them....    The new farmers were starving because of crop failures .
