Taft Becomes President 27 Roosevelt decided not to run again and picked his secretary of War Taft to run against Bryant. Taft wins easily, but in shadow of Roosevelt Payne- Aldrich Tariff compromise that upset most Gifford Pinchot called for balanced conservation policy Taft also moved away from conservationism another progressive agenda under Roosevelt

Split Party Taft backs speaker of the house that appointed himself to house rules committee (deciding on bills)- further splitting conservatives and progressive republicans In the midterm election of 1910 the democrats take the house

Bull Moose Teddy Roosevelt decided to run for a third term. Taft’s as incumbent controlled convention and replaced Roosevelt delegates Progressives refused to vote and formed a new party Progressive Party (nicknamed Bull Moose party) Platform included – women suffrage, workmen’s compensation, 8 hour work day, child labor laws and a minimum wage

Democrats win Election of 1912 Socialist Eugene Debs win no Electoral vote but takes 900,872 votes. Call to end capitalism Woodrow Wilson (Pres. 28) a reform minded Democrat takes advantage of split wins easily in the electoral college with 435 but only 42% of vote Wilson called for “New Freedoms” a progressive Democratic platform
