5 Don’t Know a Word? Look at the pictures. Sound out the word. Look at the beginning letters. Look at the ending letters. Look for a smaller word in the word. Skip the word and read the sentence. Try to guess! Does your guess look like the word you see? Use the words around it. Go back and re-read. Put another word in its place. Ask a friend Dictionary. Unknown Words Word Page

6 Archer’s Steps to Reading Big Words 1. Circle the prefixes at the beginning of the word. 2. Circle the suffixes at the end of the word. 3. Underline the letters that represent vowel sounds in the rest of the word. 4. Say the syllables of the word. 5. Say the syllables fast. 6. Figure out if there is a word you know that sounds very similar to the one you said, and then correct your pronunciation to match the word you already know.
