1 UIC 860.O vs. EN DB 410/04

2 Standard organisation
National committees AFNOR and 31 standardisation offices in France ( BNS, BNF ) BSI in UK DIN in Germany ASTM in USA, JIS in Japan, ... International committees ISO CEN Railway dedicated committees: UIC, AREMA

3 European track technical committee
CEN/TC 256/SC 1 GT 4 : Rails and welding of rails GT 5 : Machines for construction and maintenance of the track GT 15: Parameters for track design GT 16: Sleepers GT 17: Fastening systems GT 18: Switches and crossings GT 21: Track approval

4 Standards for rails and welding
Part 1: Vignole railway rails 46 kg/m and above Others: Switch and crossing rails Vignole railway rails from 27 kg/m to but excluding 46 kg/m Aluminothermic welding Flash butt welding

5 Content of the standards

9 Profiles UIC EN 4 profiles Branding UIC XX XX = mass per meter
(Note : Euro  UIC) Branding YY E 1, 2, YY: mass per meter 1,2,…geometrical variant for a same mass per meter

10 Computerized profile design

11 EN profiles and previous profiles

12 Branding CORUS HY E1

13 Qualifying tests Tensile strength and elongation
Development of a predictive equation using multiple regression analysis For each heat, calculation of the tensile strength and elongation Results have to be higher than the specified values Comparison with experimental results every tons

14 Qualifying tests Fracture mechanics KIC: toughness. Fatigue
Residual stress KIC: toughness. Da/Dn: fatigue crack growth rate Constant amplitude fatigue tests Limitation of the residual stress in rail foot, due to the straightening

15 Acceptance tests Chemical composition Microstructure Decarburisation
Oxide cleanness Sulphur prints Hardness Tensile tests Dimension tolerances Straightness, surface flatness and twist Ultrasonic test requirements Surface quality

16 Hardness

17 Profile tolerances New requirement: Crown profile

18 Straightness

19 Straightness New requirement: Twist

20 Ultrasonic test 100% of the the rail length Cross-sectional area:
³70% Head ³ 60% Web Foot Calibration: Flat bottomed Æ 2 mm

21 Surface quality

22 Conclusion Most commonly used standards of the world for the supply of railway rails have been reviewed during the preparation of this standard Modern rail production technology and the requirements of railways within the Community have demanded a completely new look at the philosophy and content This EN is performance based and requires manufacturers to offer the latest proven technology to consistently satisfy the demanding quality of the required product Guarantee is considered as a commercial aspect by CEN. Therefore, it is not included in this EN and the guarantee definition and conditions have to be written in the commercial contract
