2 Some personal definitions of Practice Development? “developing and sharing good practice” “the ways in which professionals develop their knowledge and skills guided by expert and robust evidence” “developing patient care by improving quality and effectiveness by innovative ways of working or extended roles”

3 (Cont’d) “something that makes practice more effective from patient outcome point of view, patient experience point of view and/or service efficiency (economic) point of view” “developing good practice by health workers through ensuring they are using evidence- based up-to-date methods. An example of this would be organising study days”

4 (Cont’d) “extending current skills and knowledge to change and improve clinical practice through a variety of sources (e.g. literature, shadowing colleagues, courses, reflective practice)” “related to a therapist’s CPD and developing clinical skills and knowledge in the therapist in order to improve/develop their own clinical practice, including perhaps some changes in treatment methodology”

7 So…………….. Is Practice Development: the new buzz word for clinical effectiveness? (and what did that mean?) all of the above? different things to different people?

9 A Professional Therapist? Should we assume that we should all be doing all of the above as part of our routine everyday activity? Are these the activities that define us as professionals?

23 Qualities and attributes Assuming technical knowledge and skills what words would you use to describe your fantastic, good and poor therapists? Be specific – “nice” is not enough!!

24 Building Capacity and Capability Have we identified the qualities of a super therapist?

25 How many of these skills, qualities and attributes do you have? Can you be “trained” in the qualities that the high flyers have? How do you demonstrate and evidence these qualities? Will you be interviewed in a way that selects the candidates with these qualities?

26 And if we all have these attributes…… …will we achieve a workforce of super- therapists who inherently are Practice Developers?... what will SLT look like in the medium and long term (5-10yrs) with such a workforce?
