3 3 Petunia - Propagation Tips URC arrival: Priority 3 – can be stored in cooler if needed for up to 24 hours Rooting Time: 3-3.5 weeks in 105 size plug (fast rooters) Media: High porosity mix like Fafard 1P; Fertiss ® and EllePot ® are also common Pinch in Prop: No, unless doing a large jumbo plug Temperature: 72 F ideal in media (can tone at lower temps to help control growth) Misting: Capsil ® spray (2-4 oz/100 gal) 1 day after sticking to reduce wilting early on Not as much needed as most crops – 6-7 days of misting generally sufficient Reduce mist quickly; over misting can cause purpling, chlorosis, tip abortion Fertilizer: 100-150 ppm N after roots form using Cal-Mag formulation Early feeding critical; maintain sufficient micronutrient (Fe, Mn, B, etc.) levels Supplemental Fe-chelate (Sprint ® 138 or 330) drench (2 oz/100 gal) PGR: B-Nine ® 2500 ppm spray or Sumagic ® 3-5 ppm spray Trial Florel ® (350 ppm) or Florel ® (350 ppm) + B-Nine ® (1250 ppm) combo URC arrival: Fungicide spray for Botrytis control at day 2 ©2011 Syngenta. 6 6 Grow time (from RC): 5-6 wks – Qt; 8-9 wks – Gal (1 ppp); 10-11 wks – 12-inch Baskets (4 ppp) Fertilizer Rate: 250 ppm N and higher if needed Supplemental iron if needed (Sprint ® 330 or 138 at 2-4 oz/100 gal) EC: 2.3-2.7 mS/cm (SME); Media pH: 5.4-5.8 Media: Fafard #2 or 1P (peat-based) or Fafard 4P or 3B (bark-based) Temperature: 65-75 F Day, 55-60 F Night (can go colder, but will delay flowering) Pinch: 1 pinch is generally all that is needed Extra-large pots/baskets can be pinched twice Light: LD plants – provide night-interruption on crops sold before April 1 Not as LD sensitive as calibrachoa, but some varieties are naturally later than others PGR: B-Nine ® 2500-3500 ppm spray or Sumagic ® 15-20 ppm spray Bonzi ® drenches at 1-3 ppm work nicely mid season (Picnic ™ – 1 ppm; Whispers ™, Sanguna ® – 2-3 ppm) Some growers use Florel ® early on baskets at 350-500 ppm to enhance branching Insects and Diseases: Thrips, budworm, leafminer, TMV, INSV Use a viricide (Virkon ® S, RelyOn ™, Trisodium phosphate [TSP]) when pinching Petunia – Finished Production Tips ©2011 Syngenta.
