2 Quick Facts about the IB Programme Founded in 1968 1,370 schools in the U.S. 2,000 programmes in IB Americas IB offers 4 academic programmes – Diploma Programme – Middle Years Programme – Primary Years Programme – IB Career Related Certificate More than half (56%) of IB public schools are Title I

3 What is the IB? (Our Mission) The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

5 Diploma Programme Courses

6 IB Career-Related Certificate Designed to provide a "value added" educational experience to schools that already offer the IB Diploma Programme and are also delivering career-related courses to their students. “Particularly in times of economic challenge [all] employers need a workforce that is skilled, adaptable, creative, and equipped for success in the global marketplace. 7 a graduation diploma a “vocational” qualification a certificate that assesses every aspect of the student’s programme a programme that includes similar schools a couple of “vocational” or technical courses a certificate that narrows options in competition with the Diploma Programme Page 7 The IBCC is not: a certificate a unique IB qualification a certificate of IB assessed work only a programme that includes a range of schools a challenging and rigorous academic course a certificate that broadens access and broadens options an initiative that complements IB’s existing programmes The IBCC is:

8 IBCC Programme Model

9 Career Related Studies The career-related course of study must: Be accredited, within five (5) years of making application to become an IBCC school, by a local or national education authority or a higher education institution or an employer organization – Maryland’s State-wide Career and Technology Education programs of Study Have a specific career focus Be studied concurrently with the rest of the IBCC Comprise a significant part of the student’s timetable Provide a clear pathway beyond secondary school

10 Language Development All IBCC students undertake language development and complete a language portfolio Designed to assist and further students understanding of the wider world It is appropriate to the background, needs and context of the students It aims to provide students with the necessary skills and intercultural understanding to enable them to communicate using the language studied. 11 Based on the principles of ‘service learning’ A good service learning programme will help – Knowledge development – Social development – Civic development – Personal development Develop working relationships with members of a community Community and Service Page 11

12 The Reflective Project Encapsulates fundamental elements of the certificate Embodies aims we hope to develop in students A structured piece of work that can take a variety of forms Students will need to identify, analyse, explore, critically discuss and evaluate an ethical issue arising from their vocational study Page 12

13 Approaches to Learning A course designed by the school to meet the needs of their particular cohort of students Includes the development of transferable skills with an emphasis on the nature of thinking critically and ethically and communicating effectively The four key topic areas are – personal development – intercultural understanding – thinking – communication

14 Authorization Process Consideration Phase School submits online Expression of Interest form Request for Candidacy School submits Application for Candidacy: IBCC Request for Authorization School begins working with remote consultant (10 hours) School submits Application for Authorization: IBCC Verification site visit
