2 Africa, the Unknown Continent African warriors too strong for the European sailors to take over the land Sailing ships brought technology Guns, cloth, kettles, iron and mirrors that Kings wanted The Africans had PEOPLE- Healthy and hardy people that could be used to mine and grow crops in the place that the Europeans were calling the NEW WORLD

3 Slavery In Africa Important part of Africa’s economy Yearly West African Kings sold approx. 1,000 slaves to Arab traders Slaves came from the conquered and captured during warfare Wasn’t based on racial superiority or inferiority This developed in the America

4 The Portuguese & the Slave Trade Gold led the Portuguese down coast of Africa Found that trade with the coastal Kings of Africa was more profitable Included enslaved Africans that were rounded up by the King’s armies The Portuguese developed posts at harbors on western coast of Africa Ports held the slaves waiting for transport Most slaves traveled on the MIDDLE PASSAGE Traveled to plantations by crossing the Atlantic
