2. Two Loops The heart pumps blood in two loops: – The First Loop: goes from the RIGHT side of the heart to the LUNGS and back to the heart. – The Second Loop: Goes from the LEFT side of the heart to the BODY and back to the heart.

3. Blood Vessels Arteries: When blood leaves the heart, it goes through Arteries. These are very thick and strong to withstand the force of a heart beat. Capillaries: The smallest blood vessels, this is where the exchange of oxygen, glucose and carbon dioxide takes place because they are very thin. When you break capillaries, you get bruises. They are very sensitive.

4. Blood Vessels cont. Veins: These are larger vessels that take blood back to the heart. Heart > Arteries > Capillaries > Veins > Heart

5. Different Kinds of Blood Cells Red Blood Cells: – Are red – Carry Oxygen and Carbon dioxide – Aka: Hemoglobin – They look like thumb print cookies – There are lots of them – They only live for about 120 days

6. White blood cells NINJA WHITE BLOOD CELLS! – The body’s disease fighters – They kill bacteria and alert the body when it is invaded. – There are a lot less white blood cells than red blood cells. – They can live for months or even years.

7. Platelets “scab” cells. These are the cells that make scabs and close off open capillaries, etc. The liquid blood flows in is called “Plasma”

8. Blood Types There are 4 major blood types: – A, B, AB, O AB likes everybody: A, B, AB and O A likes A and O B likes B and O O only likes O because O is “invisible”

9. Rh Factors In addition to the major blood type, they have an Rh factor: either Positive or Negative Your body is VERY picky as to which kind of blood can mix with yours. Positive likes + and – Negative ONLY likes -
