Background to our School Council and how we began to develop citizenship: First School Council Full election carried out including : Secret ballot Electoral Register (school register) Ballot boxes Polling booths

General elections Our school council started in 2004. We did it through polling booths. We also had secret ballots.

Working for our school community We began, like all good school councils, by painting the loos ! Remember the environment Recycled paint from Wastesavers used

Kirby Daniel Court Project Some School councillors went to Kirby Daniel Court to share our life stories and make films with the elderly residents.

WAG Visits We went to the Welsh Assembly Government to talk about citizenship and making links with the community.

Opening of Capel Court A few school councillors went to the opening of Capel Court and we helped the mayor plant a tree to commemorate the ceremony. Also there was a competition at school to name the building. Capel court is a new elderly resident home opposite our school.

Official unveiling Ceremony of the sculpture. We went to Belle Vue park to see a sculpture by Sebastian Cook. The sculpture was called “The Gardener’s Calendar”, and it showed the 12 months of the year. He created it to show what can be found in the environment, month by month, before global warming destroys nature as we now know it.

Healthy Eating We went to Tredegar House to take part in the consultation process, called “Appetite for Life”, about children’s thoughts on healthy school meals On June 3 rd the whole school council are looking forward to taking part in “taster sessions” of new additions to the school menu.

Forthcoming visit to Houses of Parliament Some school councillors are going to the Houses of Parliament in London on the 6 th of June where we hope to learn more about the wider community. We are hoping to meet some members of Parliament.
