Title: Helen Keller Description: The remarkable story of Helen Keller and her life long struggle with deafness and blindness. Could these horrible conditions have been prevented by the use of modern medicine? Grade Level: 9-12 Key Words: Blind, deaf, medicine, learn, and 19 century

Helen Keller  Who was Helen Keller? Who was Helen Keller?  When and where was she born? When and where was she born?  Now you have the basics! You can now move on to more complex questions.

Learning About Helen Keller For this slide you will be working in groups or pairs of two, you will answer these six questions about Helen and her life. Whoever gets the most right using accurate information and full sentences will be crowned the best of the best when it comes to the Helen Keller Test. When did Helen become deaf and blind? Why did Helen become deaf and blind? Who became Helen's teacher? How did Helen's teacher teach her to read and write? What were Helen's plan for the future? What college did Helen go to?

Medicine What was the medicine in the 1800's? What is today's medicine for blindness? What is today's medicine for deafness? It is hard to tell, but in your personal opinion do you think from what you read that Helen’s blindness and deafness could have been cured if they had our technology back then?

Walk in Helen’s Shoes Here you will get a chance to feel like Helen. Get a piece of scrap paper and pencil for everyone. Have your partner from the previous activity cover your eyes from behind. Make sure you can’t see anything…NO CHEATING! Now write your full name on the paper, try to write on the lines, remember Helen wrote books! When your done do the same for your partner. Now Mrs. Rooney will judge of who did the best, whoever wins will be named the one who can write without any light. How did it feel? Not as easy as it looks, right? Just imagine how Helen felt being blind for a lifetime when you were only blind for a minute!

Braille Helen used Braille to communicate. For this activity get with your partners from before, you will each create your own alphabet of Braille! Ex.) A-* B-$$ C- D-@ …etc Everyone will write all 26 characters of the alphabet using their own Braille. Then write a sentence using your symbols and exchange sentences and alphabets with your partner! See if they can figure out what you wrote! Who ever can get the sentences right will be declared the best of the tales using Braille!

Remembering Helen Keller When did Helen Keller die? How did she die? Where is she buried? Who is Helen buried with? What do they do in honor of Helen?
