The Old Testament lesson is read 2 Samuel 9:6-13 (NIV) 6 When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honor. David said, "Mephibosheth!" "Your servant," he replied.

The Old Testament lesson is read 2 Samuel 9:6-13 (NIV) 7 "Don't be afraid," David said to him, "for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table."

The Old Testament lesson is read 2 Samuel 9:6-13 (NIV) 8 Mephibosheth bowed down and said, "What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?"

The Old Testament lesson is read 2 Samuel 9:6-13 (NIV) 9 Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul's servant, and said to him, "I have given your master's grandson everything that belonged to Saul and his family.

The Old Testament lesson is read 2 Samuel 9:6-13 (NIV) 10 You and your sons and your servants are to farm the land for him and bring in the crops, so that your master's grandson may be provided for.

The Old Testament lesson is read 2 Samuel 9:6-13 (NIV) And Mephibosheth, grandson of your master, will always eat at my table." (Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.)

The Old Testament lesson is read 2 Samuel 9:6-13 (NIV) 11 Then Ziba said to the king, "Your servant will do whatever my lord the king commands his servant to do." So Mephibosheth ate at David's table like one of the king's sons.

The Old Testament lesson is read 2 Samuel 9:6-13 (NIV) 12 Mephibosheth had a young son named Mica, and all the members of Ziba's household were servants of Mephibosheth. 13 And Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king's table, and he was crippled in both feet.

At the end of the reading, the reader says This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Epistle is read 1 John 4:7-21 (NIV) 7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

The Epistle is read 1 John 4:7-21 (NIV) 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

The Epistle is read 1 John 4:7-21 (NIV) 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

The Epistle is read 1 John 4:7-21 (NIV) 13 We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.

The Epistle is read 1 John 4:7-21 (NIV) 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.

The Epistle is read 1 John 4:7-21 (NIV) 17 In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

The Epistle is read 1 John 4:7-21 (NIV) 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.

The Epistle is read 1 John 4:7-21 (NIV) 21 And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.

At the end of the reading, the reader says This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The pastor or leader then says or sings the Gradual Psalm appointed for the day Psalm 41:1-4 (NIV) 1 Blessed is he who has regard for the weak; the LORD delivers him in times of trouble. 2 The LORD will protect him and preserve his life; he will bless him in the land and not surrender him to the desire of his foes.

The pastor or leader then says or sings the Gradual Psalm appointed for the day Psalm 41:1-4 (NIV) 3 The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed and restore him from his bed of illness. 4 I said, "O LORD, have mercy on me; heal me, for I have sinned against you."

After the Gradual Psalm, the pastor or leader and all those gathered say or sing Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The people stand for the Gospel reading Luke 16:19-31 (NIV) 19 "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

The people stand for the Gospel reading Luke 16:19-31 (NIV) 22 "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.

The people stand for the Gospel reading Luke 16:19-31 (NIV) 24 So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'

The people stand for the Gospel reading Luke 16:19-31 (NIV) 25 "But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.

The people stand for the Gospel reading Luke 16:19-31 (NIV) 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.' 27 "He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house,

The people stand for the Gospel reading Luke 16:19-31 (NIV) 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.' 29 "Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'

The people stand for the Gospel reading Luke 16:19-31 (NIV) 30 "'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.' 31 "He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'"
