3 I MMIGRATION P OLICIES

4 Naturalization Act of 1790: Stipulated that "any alien, being a free white person, may be admitted to become a citizen of the United States" First attempt by United States government to regulate immigration 1882 The Chinese Exclusion Act: Prohibited certain laborers from immigrating to the United States. http://www.rapidimmigration.com/usa/1_eng_immigration_history.h tml

5 1917 - 1924: A series of laws were enacted to further limit the number of new immigrants. These laws established the quota system and imposed passport requirements. They expanded the categories of excludable aliens and banned all Asians except Japanese.

6 1940 The Alien Registration Act: Required all aliens (non-U.S. citizens) within the United States to register with the Government and receive an Alien Registration Receipt Card 1952 Act: Established the modern day US immigration system. It created a quota system It also established the preference system

7 USA Patriot Act 2001: Uniting and Strengthening America by providing appropriate tools required to intercept and obstruct terrorism.

8 Why all of these policies? People have been afraid these groups would “take over” People are uncomfortable with things/people who are different The possibility of illegal immigrants

9 I LLEGAL I MMIGRATION Illegal immigration - immigration across national borders in a way that violates the immigration laws of the destination country. 2007 Survey: Roughly 11.3 million illegal immigrants living in the United States 57% from Mexico 11% Central Asia People come illegally because of family and job opportunities http://www.cis.org/Illegal

10 R ESPONSE W RITING You will each write a letter to your Congressman (Dear Congressman) This letter will need to be 8-10 sentences Within the letter include the following: What you think the government should do about immigration At least 3 reasons why you feel that way Include information that we have talked about in class
