Title: Conservation of Matter Standard: 5b Do Now: How do you write the chemical formula for water? How do you write the chemical formula for carbon dioxide? How do you think the chemical equation for how water is produced chemically looks like? ____ + ____  _____ Agenda:Homework: Do NowFinish Vocab Foldable Hook, IBE Active Notes: Conservation of Matter Brain Pop Active Practice Vocab Foldable

Todays Agenda Do Now Chemical Reactions Review Notes: Conservation of Matter BrainPop! Conservation of Matter Conservation of Matter Practice Vocabulary Focus: Fold-ables!

Quick review of Chemical Reactions A chemical reaction is when you start with one thing and you end with something different. Color change Formation of a solid called a Precipitate Formation of a gas Energy (in the form of heat or light) released Also: Strong smell produced

HOOK: What happened to the alcohol on the dollar bill? If I were to weigh burn it on a scale and no gas (oxygen) could escape, what do you think the scale would show us in terms of mass?

Investigation Before Explanation: On your anticipation guide in the before column, mark whether a statement is true or false.

What we are learning about next: Standard 5b: Students know the idea of atoms explains the conservation of matter: In chemical reactions the number of atoms stays the same no matter how they are arranged, so their total mass stays the same.

Chemical Formula- a combination of chemical symbols and numbers to represent a substance. Shows which elements are in a substance (Ex NaCl is sodium and Chlorine, CO 2 is 1 carbon atom and 2 oxygen atoms) What atoms (and how many) are in H 2 O? How about CH 4 ? Chemical Equation- a representation of a chemical reaction that uses symbols to show the relationship between the reactants and the products A chemical reaction shows that the numbers and kinds fo atoms are the same before and after a reaction. (ex. H 2 + O  H 2 O

Quick Check: answer this question in your notes and circle it. How is a chemical equation different from a chemical formula?

Reactant- a substance(s) you start with in a chemical reaction What you START with Product- a substance(s) that forms in a chemical reaction What you END with

Chemical Equations: A + B C+D reactant product Reactants REACT to produce PRODUCTS

How this looks: Our LAB from Monday/Tuesday Magnesium + Copper Sulfate  Magnesium Sulfate + Copper OR: Mg + CuS  MgS + Cu A + B C+D reactant product

Chemical EquationNumber of atoms in the reactants Number of atoms in the products Na + Cl  NaClNa= Cl= Na= Cl= HCl + NaOH  NaCl + H 2 O H= Cl= Na= O= H= Cl= Na= O= 2Sb + 3I 2  2SbI 3 Sb= I= Sb= I=

The LAW of Conservation of Matter states: Matter cannot be created or destroyed during a chemical reaction. The total mass of the reactant in a chemical reaction is the same as the total mass of the products.

Check this! How does the mass of reactants in a reaction compare with the mass of the products?

Practice: Directions: In the reactions below, label each thing a “Reactant” or a “Product.”

BrainPop! Conservation of Matter Follow along on your notes sheet (the same as with the Bill Nye video). We will watch it TWICE to make sure you get everything.

Flip over your BrainPop! Let’s look at the practice on the back… Reason through it with your partner. You have 15 minutes to complete the 8 questions.

Using your blank piece of paper: Watch Ms. Capaldi for directions on how to arrange and fold them

Vocabulary to know: Your homework is to complete the vocabulary foldables- you may color them however you like, just make sure they have all the terms and definitions, and a picture for each Reactant Product Conservation of matter Chemical equation Chemical formula
