18 Barriers to integrating And 60% of people believe that the biggest barrier to being integrated is not speaking the language. The solution isn’t to throw money at translation and interpretation services or at teaching assistants for non- English speaking pupils. It’s helping more people to learn English. 16% of Bangladeshi and 12% of Pakistani women report having little or no English The Rt Hon Baroness Warsi, DCLG, Nov 2012 Research shows that English language is the second biggest predictor in occupational success, after qualifications.

22 Writing in a different script What do you think about the appearance of your writing? How did it feel to have to do the task? What would have helped to make this task easier? What do you need to consider when helping someone to write in English?

23 Learning another language You’re going to take part in a short lesson in which you will learn a few phrases in an unknown language.

24 Learning another language 1.How did you feel during the session? 2.Did you find it easy or difficult? 3.How long do you think it takes to learn a language?

25 Better communication Have a look at the phrase(s) you’ve been given. 1.Why might they be difficult for people with low levels of English? 2.How could you make them simpler?

26 Better communication Read the statements and decide if they are ‘Dos’ or ‘Don’ts’. Can you think of any more tips for effective communication?

27 Better communication Watch the role-play and list all the examples of bad communication. Now practise the role-play with a partner using good communication.
