Luke

Title: 1. English – The Gospel According to Luke 2. Greek – kata. Louka/n

Author: Luke Luke 1:1-3 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, 3 it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out....

Date of Writing: 65 – 70 AD

Theme: Jesus as the Perfect Man

Purpose: Luke 1:3-4 It seemed fitting for me... to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus; 4 so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught.

Christ in Luke: 1. Jesus as the Son of Man 2. Jesus as the Willing Sacrifice 3. Jesus as the Wisest Investment

Jesus as the Son of Man: Luke 3:23 When He began His ministry, Jesus Himself was about thirty years of age, being, as was supposed, the son of Joseph....

Jesus as the Son of Man: Luke 24:30 When He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them.

Jesus as the Willing Sacrifice Luke 9:51 When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.

Jesus as the Wisest Investment or the sons of this age are more shrewd in relation to their own kind than the sons of light. 9 And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by means of the wealth of unrighteousness, so that when it fails, they will receive you into the eternal dwellings. Luke 16:8-9 For the sons of this age are more shrewd in relation to their own kind than the sons of light. 9 And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by means of the wealth of unrighteousness, so that when it fails, they will receive you into the eternal dwellings.

Jesus as the Wisest Investment On that day, the one who is on the housetop and whose goods are in the house must not go down to take them out; and likewise the one who is in the field must not turn back. Remember Lot's wife. Luke 17:31-32 On that day, the one who is on the housetop and whose goods are in the house must not go down to take them out; and likewise the one who is in the field must not turn back. Remember Lot's wife. Luke 17:33 Whoever seeks to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.

Place in the Canon: Historically, Luke gives us many additional details about the life of Jesus. Theologically, we are reminded that while Jesus is God, he is also human. Devotionally, we should be led into a deeper worship of God as the planner of such deep mysteries as a God-Man who would save the world from sin.
