Do music and Suduko make a perfect match? By: Sarah Stallings

Problem Do students do better on Sudoku if there is music or not?

Introduction I found this project on a website. I would've picked something else but I like sudoku. It makes my brain feel like it just went on a long hard run.

Background Information History: *On July 6, 1895, Le Siècle's rival, La France, refined the puzzle so that it was almost a modern Sudoku. *It simplified the 9×9 magic square puzzle so that each row, column and broken diagonals contained only the numbers 1–9, but did not mark the sub-squares.

Hypothesis I think that the participants will do better without music. I konw I would because I always wander what song or who sings this.

Materials Computer 8 sudoku work sheets 4 Junior high students

Procedure First I’m going to get 4 Seventh Graders to volunteer. Then I will go online to a website with different sudoku problems and the answer key,and then I will print ten of them off. Then I’m going to ask teachers to see if I can use these students in teaching period. After I get permission, I will take them in a small room or the hall way, so they can figure out their sudoku.Once they have completed their sudoku problem I will compare their answers with the answer key. Then one a different day I will take the same 4 Seventh Graders to the same spot, and I will put music on and I will give them their sudoku problem. After they have finished their problem I will compare their answers with the answer key.

Major Observations Well some of the girls would move their pencil up and down a lot because they were really frustrated. When they were out in the hall doing there sudoku without music they would get stuck so they would touch different parts of the locker, then they got back to there sudoku. Also when they were listening to music they would sing along.

Conclusion Students did better without music. I think that is because they can’t stay concentrated on the task.I will got distracted when I take a test when there is music I will listen to the music instead of taking the test or trying to figure out what song it is.

Possible Applications This helps prove that when students take test they shouldn’t listen to music!

Possible Causes of Error The Girls took the test at different times they didn’t sit down and take it at one time until it was done. Also they all did the test while sitting by each other, they might of cheated!

Further Research Now since that my research has shown that students don't do as well on a test with music. I want to see if students can remember a pattern with music better or without music better.

Time Spent The time I spent on this project was about 25 hours. I worked on my project at school and at home.

Acknowledgements I want to thank Hannah, Mac, Erin, and Jessica for participating in my science fair project. Also I want to thank Mrs. Riffel for helping me and for providing time to work on our project.
