1 Afternoons with Alice Tom Stokke Computer Science Department University of North Dakota

2 MASH*  Elementary K-5 after school program  *Marvelous After School Hours  3 PM – 6 PM with minimum 2 hours of academics  Staffing  One certified elementary educator  Additional UND students as to meet a 15-1 student-to-teacher ratio

3 Festivals  15 to 20 day programs for the students  Self-paced with limited faculty interaction  Staff will generally not have training specific to the Festival topics  Guaranteed in the initial use of Alice

4 The Goal  Create an afterschool program for MASH  Focus on students in grades 3 – 5  One school for Fall 2009  Hopefully in six schools Spring 2010  Create tutorials for all students  Ideally minimal help  Students will vary greatly in skill-level  Help students with what they want to do with Alice

5 Tutorials  Overview videos  Intro to Alice,  Intro to the environment/editor  Intro to 3d  Adding objects  Loading and saving worlds  Setting up scenes  Includes outline of procedures  Most are interactive, some with quizzes  Most have accompanying PDF’s

6 Inspire imagination  Show what can be done  Several sample Alice movies  Show how it was done  Each sample movie lists a series of “skills” required to create the movie  Show all the objects they can use  Picture and name of all available objects

7 Progression of skills  Sample movies are created to demo each skill  Demonstration movies are categorized by required skills  Movies include outline of steps  Snippets are divided into Starter, Advanced, and Expert

8 Sample skills  Starter skills  Adding objects  Moving/turning objects  Putting objects “back” onto the ground  Changing colors  Hiding objects  Saying and thinking text  Using built-in sounds  Advanced skills  Events  Camera movement with dummy objects  Using distance functions for movement  Recording sounds for playback  Creating movies  Writing methods  Expert skills  Use of variables  Writing methods with arguments

9 Snippets  Working name for brief audio/video tutorials/demonstrations  Small demos  Shows a single skill  Ideally under a minute in length  Marked up with arrows or boxes to emphasis critical areas

10 Sharing  Alice will be provided on CD for all students  All tutorials, including snippets, will be publicly available at http://alice.cs.und.edu http://alice.cs.und.edu  Option for students work to be posted to the website  Downloading for work at home  Sharing work with family, friends  Details TBD  Goal for publishing snippets on YouTube, UStream, …

11 Evaluations  Daily questionnaire for faculty  What questions were asked?  That they could answer  That they couldn’t answer  What do the faculty want to know about Alice?  Website logs  Google Analytics

12 Other use for tutorials  Guest instructor – middle school methods course  Working with future student teachers on including Alice in their plans  Moviemaking camp for 12 – 18 year olds  Alice will be an optional component

13 Future works  Workshop for MASH educators  Prepare site coordinators for future festivals  Implement at all area elementary schools  Continuing Education summer workshop  Prepare area educators to use Alice in their classroom
