Cyberspace CyberSafety CyberBullying CyberStalking What is Cyber---

Acronyms “Hide” message in case message is discovered Multiple meanings “Red flags” Evolving every day Get to know common acronyms

Putting Pieces Together It’s easy to find a general location School uniforms Pictures with house numbers, street name, other identifiers Local dialect (i.e. beach versus shore) Geotags

CyberCrimes Megan Meier Ryan Halligan Tyler Clementi Jessica Logan Sarah Butler Rachel Neblett Hannah Smith Grace McComas Amanda Todd Phoebe Prince Kenneth Weishuhn, Jr. Hope Witsell

Statistics Victims double every year Kids detached- don’t “see” the harm Little taught in school Does not always make headlines Various forms- from texts to images to blog posts to e-mails Difficult to prove who’s behind the “web wall”

How To Stay Safe Avatars/ pseudonyms Remove geotags Don’t post vacation/ travel plans/ schedules

For Teachers Remind teachers that if it is online, someone can and WILL find it Just because you deleted it doesn’t mean that someone else doesn’t have it posted Keep all social networking sites and information private Be aware of what others are posting about you There have been cases where teachers have been dismissed for conduct unbecoming of a public servant Teachers should model online behavior for their students Never provide personal information to anyone online When in doubt- ask. Know school policies. The only stupid question is the one not asked

Tools for Parents Learn Internet acronyms that children use to keep parents from snooping (Examples: POS - parent over shoulder, POP - parent on prowl, CTN - can't talk now). Remind your child to stay anonymous. Don't share personal information online. Share and discuss news stories about cyberstalkers and online sexual predators. Visit social websites like myspace.com with your child. Discuss sites that may offer too much information, inappropriate photographs, or that might have other "red flags" associated with them. Install Internet filters, but don't assume that they will take the place of parental supervision.
