GENOMICS MEETS GRID INTRODUCTION CHRIS THOMPSON

BACKGROUND SR 2000 - £120M NATIONAL PROGRAMME ON e- SCIENCE £8M BBSRC PROGRAMME ON BIOINFORMATICS AND e-SCIENCE IN 2001: –5 PILOT PROJECTS (ca £5M) –ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES –SUMMER SCHOOL TRAINING –GRID SUPPORT CENTRE POST

GRID PILOT PROJECTS STERNBERG et al: A distributed pipeline for structure-based proteome annotation using GRID technology SANSOM et al: A GRID database for biomolecular simulations NAVE et al: An e-Science resources for high through-put structural biology BISBY: A problem-solving environment for global biodiversity: prototype and demonstrator KIRKWOOD et al: Biology of Ageing: e-Science integration and simulation system GODDARD et al: Grid-enabled modelling tools and databases for neuroinformatics

GAPS Areas not supported through the e-Science programme: –Genomics –Investigating Gene Function Initiative groups –BBSRC-supported Institutes Grid Support Centre post - £200K over 3 years

SR2002 e-SCIENCE Up to £10M for a new BBSRC initiative Focus on integrating data from different sources to inform about systems, organisms and their interaction Build on existing e-Science activities Develop Grid technology for use in key areas not covered by SR2000: Genomics, IGF and the Institutes

AIMS OF THIS MEETING To educate the e-Science community about informatics problems in genomics To inform the genomics community about what Grid technology can offer To explore opportunities for collaboration To identify possible pilot projects To define how the Grid Support Centre can help

MEETING STRUCTURE 1 Short presentations from genomics groups highlighting key issues; Grid people to respond with first thoughts on how their technology might help Plenary brainstorming; write on Post-its: –Genomics informatics problems –Possible Grid solutions –Synergy with ongoing projects Group them and identify breakout groups

MEETING STRUCTURE 2 Breakout groups to explore opportunities and identify some possible pilot projects – identify a rapporter Re-convene breakout groups the next day to prepare for report-back Report-back on ideas generated

NEXT STEPS Develop collaborative groupings Seek input from Grid Support Centre Establish pilot projects; funding can be sought from BBSRC responsive mode committees – Bioinformatics and e-Science Cross Committee priority Develop bids for Sr2002 e-Science Initiative
