ENGLISH 10 WEEK 9 MLA CITATION

ENG 10 DO NOW 3/9/15 We are going to be using these words this week, looking back over your notes or using your own previous knowledge, try to define the following words: 1.Citation 2.MLA 3.In-text Citation 4.Works Cited Page

SUCCESS TODAY MEANS Students are learning how to give credit to the source of information they borrowed to strengthen their arguments. You know you are successful when you have created your own Works Cited Page at the end of your argument.

QUICK NOTES: MLA CITATION Citation: information about how to find the exact source written in a specific order/way Works Cited: a SEPARATE page after the essay that list s the sources in alphabetically order using handing indents. In-text Citation: When a writer either quotes a specific source or refers to information from a specific source, s/he gives credit to that source either by directly naming the author or book, or by putting that info in parentheses at the end of the quote or sentence. 6 ENGLISH 10 DO NOW 3/10/15 What’s wrong with this body paragraph? (Think about our Do Now terms from yesterday) “The last reason high school education should be mandatory is because if it weren’t mandatory, no one would go and we’d all depend on the government. More than 40% of the United States is on a government program or receiving government support. Out of that 40,30 don’t have a high school education. That shows that not having an education affects your life. With a high school education, you’re most likely to depend on yourself in the future. High school education should be mandatory.”

NEEDS AN “IN-TEXT CITATION” Parenthetical in-text citation: The last reason high school education should be mandatory is because if it weren’t mandatory, no one would go and we’d all depend on the government. More than 40% of the United States is on a government program or receiving government support (Jeffery). (Source’s Full Citation) Jeffery, Terrence. "Census: 49% of Americans Get Gov't Benefits; 82M in Households on Medicaid." CNS News. CNS News, 23 Oct. 2013. Web. 06 Mar. 2015. Direct Citation The last reason high school education should be mandatory is because if it weren’t mandatory, no one would go and we’d all depend on the government. According to Terrence Jeffery of the CNS News, more than 40% of the United States is on a government program or receiving government support

SUCCESS TODAY MEANS 3/10/15 Students are learning how to cite evidence used in their essays by using MLA citations. You know you are successful when you pass your NoRedInk (via Edmodo) MLA capitation assignment True success means your essay has at least one cited source in each body paragraph and a works cited page with at least 3 full source citations.

ENGLISH 10 DO NOW 3/11/15 WHAT’s wrong with this Works Cited page? (Hint: there are a couple things)

WHERE IS AN IN-TEXT CITATION NEEDED? Many people believe that convicted felons shouldn’t have the right to vote because, they have broken the law. They the convicted gave up that right when they chose to do the crime. It is the consequence of doing the unjust thing. In 2010, an estimated 5.85 million people in the United States could not vote due to felony restrictions. If felons are going to break the law anyways why should their vote count? If you want to have a say so in society laws, you have to abide by society laws. Citizens who have never broken the law say, felons shouldn’t have the right to vote because, it’s a consequence for decisions and for that a privilege “voting” has to be taken away. Others, who understand the life of a felon, feel that a felon should be able to vote.

SUCCESS TODAY MEANS 3/11 Students apply their learning of citations to make sure their essay has 1.A Proper Works Cited Page with 3 citations min, 2.Each body paragraph has at least one piece of evidence with an in-text citation (3 in-text citations min. for the essay). If you did not use research in each paragraph, start researching and add that info) Reminders: use www.easybib.com to make your Works Cited Page Citations.www.easybib.com
