6 MEGAcities – Urban Primacy Urban Primacy is when one city is 3 to 4 times larger than any other city in the country. EG – Mexico City Latin American cities typically have large numbers of impoverished citizens (often illegally) living on its periphery. These areas are called squatter settlements or favelas. Informal economic activity (drug dealing or unlicensed street vending) is a major source of employment for many inhabitants of the favelas.

7 Rapid Urbanization Activity Take the TOTAL AMOUNT of housing (Upper / Middle / Lower) that you have on your plan and DOUBLE it. Now ADD this housing to your existing plan. This housing will be for a large influx of poor people from the countryside that have come to your city looking for work. What changes / stresses is this large influx of people putting on your city? Why are these people moving into your city?

8 Rocinha Is the largest Favela in Brazil and is built in the steep hillsides that surround the city of Rio De Janeiro. Rocinha has traditionally been controlled by the violent gangs that control the local drug trade. Estimates of the population range from 125,000 + people live in just this one squatter settlement. Although it is growing in certain countries, there is not much of a Middle Class in many LA countries.
