5. Casual employment Usually not on a permanent basis Is employed by the hour Paid at a higher rate, usually 20% above the award rate May be engaged for a period up to 12 weeks at any one time

6. Part-time Involved in work with a regular pattern of hours which average less than 38 hours per week Access to proportionate salary and benefits which include pro rata sick leave and long service leave, access to step pay scales and the requirement of at least 7 days notice before termination. Working in excess of the hours agreed are paid overtime

7. Full-time Permanent employees Part of their employment contract includes annual leave, sick leave, penalty rates, public holidays, accident pay. Payment of wages on a regular basis. Can be a wage or salary. Wages are paid at an hourly rate, this allows overtime to be paid. Salary is a set amount per year.

8. Self-employed Permanency and regularity of pay depends on the viability of the business Usually work long hours Multi-skilled in carrying out all aspects of the business – self reliant. Flexible working arrangement Benefits such as sick leave and long- service leave are not included.

9. Voluntary It is productive, valuable and contributes to the economy both directly and indirectly. Formal and informal voluntary work, incorporates choice and involves individuals giving their time freely, that is, receiving no remuneration for work done. Formal voluntary work is carried out in the public sphere, within properly constituted organisations. The latest ABS statistics reveal that 32% of Australians aged over 18 volunteered for an organisation.

10. Unpaid work This is informal work carried out in th private sphere such as caring for family, friends and neighbours.

Undertake internet research to determine the historical reasons for changes that have occurred in each form of employment. Note: self-employed and voluntary/unpaid work have only current statistics. Instead of accounting for historical trends, state WHY people become involved in these types of work.
