Introduction Students will clarify materials hidden inside balloons by identifying their characteristics. Classifying Matter Scope 5.7A Engage

Materials 5 colored balloons 30 milliliters of syrup 30 milliliters of water 1 Marble 28 grams of rice 1 Washer 1 or 2 magnets Introduction Students will clarify materials hidden inside balloons by identifying their characteristics.

Procedure/Questions Put a marble in a balloon and tie the end. Put a small amount of water in a balloon and tie the end Do the same for the syrup and rice. Each in a separate balloon. Put some air in one balloon Introduction Students will clarify materials hidden inside balloons by identifying their characteristics.

Procedure/Questions Divide the class into five groups Give each group a balloon Tell the students that they are to guess what material is in the balloon Introduction Students will clarify materials hidden inside balloons by identifying their characteristics.

Procedure/Questions Introduction Students will clarify materials hidden inside balloons by identifying their characteristics. Ask: What could you do to find out what material is in your balloon? (Note: It is the material, not the object, which is of interest.)

Procedure/Questions Tell each group to write down words that describe the object inside the balloon. They may do anything they want to the balloon to find out what is inside except open it. Have magnets and other materials available. Introduction Students will clarify materials hidden inside balloons by identifying their characteristics.

Procedure/Questions As students are working, ask these questions – 1.What tests are you going to use to gain information about your object? 2.Are there any tools you need that you don’t have? 3.If you had to put your object in a group, what would the group be called?

Procedure Allow each group to present their findings and their guess as to what material is in each balloon. Tell the students that the information they used to identify the object are the object’s properties. Introduction Students will clarify materials hidden inside balloons by identifying their characteristics. Ask: How do the properties of an object tell us what it is made of?

Interfacing Inquiry Introduction Students will clarify materials hidden inside balloons by identifying their characteristics. Ask: what questions do you have about the properties of different materials?
