Welcome to the Third Law!!! Third Law of Motion – It states… If one object exerts a force on another object, then the second object exerts a force of equal strength in the opposite direction of the first object. (whew!) Or… Every action has an equal and opposite reaction! (much better)

Newton’s 3 rd Law comes in pairs! Action reaction pairs

Can you feel the force around you? Can you always detect the motion? – Nope! – Sometimes the inertia is too great that causes the acceleration to be too small to notice!

Here’s the question… How can the garbage can move when the force on my foot to the garbage can is the same force the can is exerting on my foot? Let’s take a look at Newton’s 2 nd Law of Motion Force = Mass x Acceleration (Let’s figure this out!)

How much motion… Newton said: – All objects have a, “Quantity of Motion”. – Momentum A characteristic of a moving object that is related to the mass and velocity of the object. Momentum = Mass x Velocity

Hmmm… Law of Conservation of Momentum – The total momentum of any group of objects remains the same, or is conserved, unless outside forces act on the objects. (whew)
