People who migrated from the North – Small bands of adventures – Called Rus (this is where we get Russia) Settled with the Slavs Slavs invited Viking chief Rurik to become their King Novgorod Oleg moved the capital to Kiev along the Dnieper – Allowed to trade with the Byzantine Empire

Attack Kievan Rus in 1280 (and win) Ivan I gets rich helping the Mongols Ivan I moves capital to Moscow with the Patriarch Ivan III refused to pay the Mongol tribute (tax) Standoff at the Ugra river – They both got to the river and NEVER FOUGHT??? What the heck?
