Warm-Up Popcorn ◦On a piece of paper write down the following words and next to each, write down what that word means to you. ◦You will have 4 minutes to complete ◦DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME ON THIS PAPER! ◦Words to define ◦Independent* Trials ◦Title* Control ◦Hypothesis* Constant ◦Dependent* Variable ◦Experimental* Groups

August 27 th, 2014 ◦Objective: BTEC/SWBAT : demonstrate their understanding of the Nature of Science and how to properly create experimental designs by reviewing basic terminology, creating & run a Thumb lab, and perform a gallery walk critiquing work. ◦Agenda: ◦WarmUP – Popcorn ◦ExD example ◦Experimental Design Handout ◦Thumb Lab & Poster ◦Gallery Walk ◦Close – Cornell

Warm-Up Popcorn - Definitions ◦Independent Variable: “THE CAUSE” Must be measurable or categorized and manipulated by the scientist. This is the factor that causes a change. ◦Dependent Variable: “THE EFFECT” Must be measurable or categorized and is the result of the IV. This is the factor that changes because the IV causes it to change. ◦Title: This is the research question to which an answer is sought. Includes IV and DV. It can easily be phrased as “THE EFFECT” of the IV of the DV. ◦Hypothesis: This is the prediction about the effect of the IV on the DV. It is based on information collected before completing the experiment. It proposed the specific way in which the IV will cause the DV to change. It can easily be stated as an “IF/WHEN…, THEN…” statement. ◦Experimental Groups: The groups of the IV will be tested are described. The control situation is labeled. There are two groups minimum and they are described based on how the IV changes, ◦Repeated Trials: Experiments are performed many times in order to average the data and minimize the chance of error. ◦Control: The group of the experiment that get no treatment and is the comparison group. ◦Constants: Every factor except the IV must stay the same. Be specific when referring to constants

Example ◦Suppose you want to figure out the fastest route to walk home from school. ◦You will try several different routes and time how long it takes you to get home by each one. ◦Since you are only interested in finding a route that is fastest for you, you will do the walking yourself. ◦What’s the IV, DV, & Control?
5
Example - Answers ◦Varying the route is the IV ◦The time it takes is the DV ◦Keeping the same walker throughout makes the walker a control.

Thumb Wrestling Lab - Procedures ◦In your group of 3, you will design and test a lab experiment from hypothesis to conclusion. Utilize the ExD Template provided for you. ◦There are several supplies available for you to use. It is up to you on what items you will need to test your hypothesis. ◦Once your group has designed and tested your hypothesis, you will then create a poster depicting you experiment from Title to Conclusion. ◦You will have 30 minutes to design your experiment, test your hypothesis, and create your poster. ◦When you are done with your poster, use tape to hang it up on the wall for the gallery walk.

Expectations C (conversation) This is a small group activity so you may speak ONLY to your lab partners at your lab table or the teacher. You should keep your voice level to a 4 inch voice. H (help) If you need help, please ask your lab partners or raise your hand and I will come around and assist you. I will have my lab rubric so if you are unable to follow these instructions you and your partners will have 3 pts removed from your lab grade for each infraction. A (activity) You will be conducting the Thumb Wrestle Inquiry lab. Each of you will design an experiment to be tested and create a poster representing your data, results and conclusion. M (movement) You will stay at your lab until it is time to do the gallery walk. No one should leave their lab table for any reason. All lab partners should stay at their designated lab tables. P (participation) I will know you are participating if you are physically working on the lab and writing information down. S (signal) You will only have 30 minutes to complete this lab. Be sure you are staying active. You will know when it is time to clean up when the teacher tells you it is time.
8
Gallery Walk ◦Start at your poster and we will rotate to the right. ◦You will have 1 minute at each poster to critique. Using the post-it notes provided, you and your partners will critique other lab groups posters. ◦All critiques must be positive or reinforcing in nature. ◦When you reach your original poster, view critiques. ◦Discuss as class.
